Located in Montreal, the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of Canada’s largest medical institutions, providing health care services to over 700,000 patients per year. A bilingual teaching hospital with close ties to McGill University, MUHC was created through the merge of six local hospitals. Together, they provide inpatient and ambulatory care, as well as specialized and ultraspecialized services for cancer care, mental health, surgery, neuroscience, women’s health, pediatric medicine and more.

DEVELOPING A LEADING-EDGE MEDICAL FACILITY

In recent years, the MUHC has undergone a redevelopment, with four goals in mind: providing specialized patient care, teaching the next generation of healthcare professionals, conducting fundamental and clinical research, and evaluating new technologies.

To help achieve these goals, the MUHC began building their Glen site, which is a mega-hospital due to open in 2015. This state-of-the-art facility will feature leading-edge surgical facilities, separate adult and pediatric emergency departments, outpatient clinics linked to 25 departments and a neonatal intensive care unit and more.

The Glen site will bring together three of the MUHC’s standalone hospitals under one roof and will also house the MUHC’s research institute, a new cancer center, and the Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Canada.

RADIOLOGY AT MUHC

As a preeminent medical institution, MUHC’s staff of 40 radiologists conduct nearly 470,000 studies per year across all subspecialties. This includes studies performed at the organization’s renowned Cedars Breast Clinic, where five radiologists and six radiology technicians provide care for over 20,000 women per year.

As a teaching hospital with close ties to McGill University’s Department of Radiology, the MUHC not only provides the highest quality of patient care, but also plays a crucial role in training the next generation of radiologists and conducting research to further knowledge in the field.

INTELERAD AT MUHC

Intelerad’s relationship with the MUHC dates back to the mid-90s, when Intelerad’s founders designed, developed and implemented one of Canada’s first large-scale filmless PACS. Since that time, Intelerad has continued to build a strong relationship with MUHC, deploying IntelePACS® across their network of hospitals and working with them to develop and deploy cutting-edge radiology solutions that play a pivotal role in the delivery of patient care.

“Intelerad solutions help productivity a lot, allowing our radiologists to perform better so things get
done quicker,” said Alain Gauvin, Electronic Imaging Manager at MUHC. “This comes not only from
Intelerad’s integrated reporting and electronic signature, but also from remote reading capabilities
which provides the same workflow quality regardless of location.”

According to Mr. Gauvin, MUHC’s radiologists are particularly fond of InteleViewer™, which provides fast, high performance viewing across all modalities and bandwidths.

“Our radiologists speak quite highly of InteleViewer, particularly in terms of usability,” says Mr.
Gauvin. “Having a reading interface with features like digital dictation, result reporting, and signoff
built in, allows them to achieve more in a day.”
