Featured Customer: the Montreal Children Hospital

The Montreal Children’s Hospital was founded in 1904 with the sole mandate of caring for sick children. It quickly established its reputation as a pioneer in pediatric medicine in the early years when many children fell ill with infectious diseases such as typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and polio.

A teaching hospital affiliated with McGill University since 1920, the Montreal Children's Hospital has major research strengths in such fields as genetics, growth and development, musculoskeletal disorders and neuroscience, oncology, psychosocial problems and cardio-respiratory health.

Today, the Montreal Children’s Hospital Medical Imaging department treats approximately 50,000 patients from 0 to 18 years annually and provides regular x-ray, fluoroscopy, CT Scanning, magnetic resonance, angiography, interventional procedures, ultrasound and nuclear medicine examinations. The medical imaging department shares the same value as the founding principle of the hospital– putting the needs of children firstand has organized the entire imaging workflow around the patients.

From cartoon characters located at strategic locations and special set-ups around the modalities to make them feel more comfortable, to a dedicated family room for sedation and recovery, the pediatric approach places the children at the center of the care chain.

Shortly after the introduction of IntelePACS in 2004, the Montreal Children’s Hospital extended its reach to northern territories. Medical images from Nunavik children no longer travel in suitcases by plane but rather get dropped via satellite overnight to be read by the appropriate radiologists. With 80,000 pediatric exams per year, the Children’s Hospital recently added digital dictation to its reading platform and already improved turnaround times by up to 15%. There is no doubt that this century old institution places the well being of children at the heart of its mandate.
